The Power of the Advisory Period in Middle School

This past week, I had the privilege of attending a professional workshop alongside other middle school leaders led by Chris Balme, author of Finding the Magic in Middle School.

Balme opens our eyes to a powerful reframe: middle school is not an awkward obstacle to survive, but a profound developmental adventure defined by three core currents—Belonging, Achievement, and Authenticity. Our students are navigating the whitewater rapids of figuring out who they are, how they connect, and what they contribute.

At the very heart of this journey is our Advisory period.

As Balme highlights, Advisory is far more than a scheduling placeholder or a routine check-in. It is the anchor of our school day. It is where the frantic pace of changing classes slows down, and where every student is guaranteed to encounter an adult who acts not as a boss, but as a trusted guide. In Advisory, students find the psychological safety required to unpack their shifting identities, form positive peer connections, and realize they belong to a community that values them exactly as they are.

Thank you for the care, patience, and intentionality you bring to Advisory every single day. Because of your dedication, our students are learning that there is truly magic in the middle.

I have a deep appreciation for all you do.
